Financial aid to girl child hiked

The Delhi Cabinet today cleared & proposal for substantial enhancement of financial benefits to the girl child with an aim to overcome the decline in child sex ratio. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.   Mrs. Dikshit said that the government is concerned about the decline in girl child sex ratio and has hence decided to hike incentives for the birth of girl children apart from increasing stage-wise financial benefits to encourage their education. She added that an amount of Rs 1 lakh instead of Rs 18,000 would be redeemed on attaining the age of 18 years.  The liberalized benefits would come into effect from 1 January 2008 whereas benefits for the education of girls would be implemented from the academic session 2008-09. The deposit of Rs 5,000 in the name of each girl child born in government/local body hospitals has been increased to Rs 6,000 whereas Rs 4,000 would be granted on the birth of a girl child other than hospital i.e. at home.
