Christians attacked in Thane, 6 hurt

AT LEAST six people were injured when unidentified men attacked a group of Christians at Kutal village in Wada, Thane (Rural) on Sunday morning. The incident, the fourth such attack in a month, comes a day after a Christian delegation led by Abraham Mathai, vice-chairman of State Minorities Commission, met Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil to complain about the attacks. Patil ordered an inquiry into the incidents, he added. A police official told HT, on condition of anonymity, that the victims were on their way to a place of worship at the time of the incident. Sunday's attack comes two days after a pastor was allegedly assaulted in Vikramgad. He said the police were '"hand in glove with the attackers and protecting them". Mathai blamed a Hindu group active in the area for the attacks. Police Commissioner Naval Bajaj of Thane (rural) said he had been informed about the attacks. "We are gathering further details and if we get reports of any discrimination by the police or that the police have faulted in their probe, we will take action," he said.  (Source: The Hindustan Times, November 5, 2007)
