Tribals demand implementation of Forest Rights Act

Tribals of Balangir, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Koraput and several other districts of the State on Tuesday demanded immediate implementation of the ST and other Tribal Forest Dwellers (recognition of Forest Rights) Act of 2006. Under the banner of Campaign for Survival and Dignity (CSD), tribal people of these districts demanded that the State. Government stop all developmental works like plantation, JBIC, WFP and watershed activities on forest land, which is being cultivated by the forest dwellers till the Forest Right Act notified. No action should be undertaken by any Government authority, which hampers the historical rights over forest assured by the Forest Rights Act of 2006, social activist Prafulla Samantra said while addressing a meeting organized by the CSD at PMG Square here.

The CSD submitted a memorandum to Governor MC Bhandare urging his intervention. “Include all the genuine forest dependents living in and around the forest for their primary livelihood under the Forest Rights Act and restrict the land mafias and contractors. There should not be any dilution of the original act in name of determining Forest Rights Rule,” the memorandum said. It also said, “There should not be any further determination of Wildlife Habitat till the Act of 2006 is not implemented.”  (Source: The Pioneer, October 3, 2007)
