Bishop John Elliot Ghose has been called home on July 6, 2007 at Nursing Home in Silliguri.  He was 79 and had been suffering for last few years with various ailments relating to diabetic and cardiac problem.  A few weeks back he had a cerebral attack and went in coma for some days.  His mortal body was taken to Darjeeling on July 7, 2007 and the funeral took place in Darjeeling the following day.

Bishop John Elliot Ghose was consecrated as Bishop in the Church of North India on 10th November, 1974 at St. Paul's Cathedral, Calcutta and was installed as the Bishop of Darjeeling (now Eastern Himalaya) on 8th December, 1974, at St. Andrew's Church, Darjeeling.  He was elected as the Fifth Moderator of the Church of North India at the 7th Synod held in October 1989 for the triennium 1989-1992.  The Eighth Synod held in October 1992 paid rich tribute to the Moderator Ghose for his able leadership in the following words:

"This Synod acknowledged with gratitude the contribution made by the Most Rev. Dr. John E. Ghose through his wise and patient leadership in the Church during his tenure as the 5th Moderator of the Church of North India, 1989-92.  This past triennium had been a time of considerable tension which was a result of many accumulated problems of past several years.  Inspite of these, under his leadership some very difficult decisions were taken.  He has been carrying on Episcopal responsibility of two Dioceses Darjeeling and Durgapur, in addition to his duties as the Moderator.  But he has borne the stress of all this with patience.  We record our gratitude to him for his patience and courage".

Bishop Ghose was elected to the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches and participated in many national and international ecumenical movements.  He was conferred the degree of Doctor of Divinity (honoris causa) by the Senate of Serampore College in the year 1991.

He leaves behind his second wife Seema, two daughters and two son-in-laws and their children.  Let us thank God for the life and the ministry of Bishop Ghose and pray for peace for the bereaved family.  You may send a letter of condolence to:
