REV. DR. SUNIL M. CALEB- NEW PRINCIPAL OF BISHOP'S COLLEGE, CALCUTTA

 

The Bishop College Society at their Annual General Meeting held on August 28, 2007, appointed The Rev. Dr. Sunil Caleb, as Principal of Bishop's College with immediate effect. The Annual General Meeting was presided over by the Moderator of the Church of North India the Most Rev. Joel V Mal who is the ex-officio Chairman of the Society. It may be noted that the Bishop's College is one of the premier theological Colleges in the entire South Asia region and has completed 186 year of ministry in the region.

Born on 20th November, 1963 in Shimla, H.P., to Rev. (later Bishop) Maqbul Caleb and Mrs. Jane Caleb, Sunil's initial education was in Dalhousie, H.P., Baring School, Batala, Punjab and The Doon School, Dehra Dun. For College education, he was at D.A.V.College, Chandigarh and St. Stephen's College, Delhi where he was active with the Chapel and The Hiking Club. After completing his B.A. (Hons) in 1985, Sunil did his M.A. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. For his initial theological education Sunil went to United Theological College Bangalore, as a sponsored candidate of the Diocese of Amritsar (CNI), where he obtained his B.D. in 1992. He then returned to his diocese and served for five years (1992-1997) as Deacon and Presbyter at Christ Church, Shimla. He was ordained Presbyter on the 25th of April, 1993 at Kotgarh, District Shimla, H.P.  Meanwhile in May 1990, Sunil married Beulah Joel who is a trained (M.A., B.Ed.) teacher of English to school children. She is also a Church musician.

In August 1997 Sunil went with his family to the UK to study at the University of Kent at Canterbury where he obtained his Ph.D. in Christian ethics for a Thesis entitled, "A Christian Ethical Evaluation of Economic Policy and Development in India (1947-1997)" in the year 2000. He then returned to India to Bishop's College, Kolkata where he has been an Associate Professor of Theology and Christian Ethics for the past seven years.

Sunil and Beulah have two daughters; Pratibha, aged 16 years is now in the Tenth standard, while Namrata is 11 years and in the sixth standard. Apart from his academic responsibilities Sunil, is Assistant Presbyter of St. Andrew's Church, Kolkata.
