St. Stephen’s Hospital Celebrates 125 years

St. Stephen's Hospital, Delhi celebrates 125 years of service in the year 2010. To mark this occasion, a Thanksgiving and Rededication Service was held by the Hospital on the 01st of January 2010. The Moderator of CNI, Most Rev. Purely Lyngdoh, was the Chief Guest. He spoke the mission of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, the mission of the Church, and how both these stem from the love of God. He said that we have a mission to serve the poor and needy, and this is an occasion to rededicate ourselves to this.

The Moderator released a Wall Clock and a Wall Calendar on this occasion. The Wall Calendar features photographs of flowers that bloomed in 2008-09 in the Hospital gardens.

Rt. Rev. Franco Mulakkal of the Catholic Church and Very Rev. Scariah from the Orthodox Church were also present on this occasion, besides Rev. Dr. Enos Das Pradhan, General Secretary, CNI and two former Bishops of Delhi, Rt. Rev. Pritam Santram and Rt. Rev. Karam Masih.

Today, St. Stephen’s Hospital is a 650 bed tertiary care centre. Located in North Delhi, it is the oldest hospital in Delhi as well as the largest non-governmental hospital. Yet one cannot forget the humble beginnings. This hospital began in a building in Chandni Chowk in 1885. From there it moved to the present location at Tis Hazari. What started as a Maternity Hospital gradually grew into a general hospital. Further specialization of departments led to it being a full-fledged tertiary care center. St. Stephen’s Hospital today has all the required facilities to provide quality medical care. Round the clock services are offered in all specialties. Emergency services, specialty ICUs, comprehensive radiology and laboratory diagnostic services provide the framework for all OPD and in-patient services.

Now for the first time, St. Stephen’s Hospital is spreading its wings of care from the present campus to Gurgaon. A medical facility is soon to be opened there which will continue the tradition of affordable quality care which has been the hallmark of this institution. As this hospital completes 125 years of service to Delhi, it asks for your prayers and support to continue this medical mission that it has been vested with by our Lord Jesus Christ.
