Bishop Samar Bairagi Passes Away

The Church of North India lost a prayer warrior in the person of BISHOP SAMAR BAIRAGI., the former Bishop of Barrackpore who received his Heavenly Call to be with the Lord on January 30, 2010 in Kolkata. He was 83 years old having been born on January 7, 1927. He was indeed a man of deep prayer who influenced a large number of people through his life.
After graduation from Bishop’s College, he was posted to Chinsurah Church in the year 1960 during pre-union days. He remained there as the Pastor of the said Church till 1971 and after church union he was transferred to the Churches in the Diocese of Calcutta, Church of North India during which period he served in Bhowanipur Congregational Church, St. Mary’s Church and St. George’s Church.
He was consecrated as the Bishop of the Church of North India and was installed in the Diocese of Barrackpore on August 15, 1982 and served the Diocese with distinction and dedication until January 1992 when he retired. Even after retirement he was associated with the Old Mission Church and many other churches in Kolkata and was engaged in preaching and taking worship services until November 2009.
He is survived by his wife Hilda, daughters Sushmita and Papiya, sons-in-law and four grand children.
His funeral took place on February 1, 2010 at St. St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kolkata.
