WORLD CHURCHES TO MARK 100 YEARS OF LANDMARK MISSION EVENT

As the centennial of a landmark mission event approaches in 2010, a global study process is mobilizing churches, theological institutions and mission bodies around the world.

The World Mission Conference that took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1910 brought together some 1,200 representatives mainly linked to the Western missionary movement. In addition to its focus on evangelism, the historic gathering emphasized cooperation and unity.

'Battle won, war not ended' says Sri Lanka Bishop urging equality

Sri Lankan church leaders say the end of the country's 26-year civil war announced by the government is a signal to address grievances and to ensure citizens from all ethnic and religious groups can feel proud of their nation.

The island nation's President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 19 May declared the end of the bloody and protracted civil war, in which fighters seeking autonomy for the country's minority Tamil population introduced to the world the concept of suicide bombers with explosives strapped to their bodies.

'Angels and Demons' tops takings on science and religion theme

Angels and Demons" - the sequel to the 2006 blockbuster movie "The Da Vinci Code" - opened in 96 countries over the weekend and claimed top spot in North America with US$48-million in ticket sales and US$104-million in other ticket sales worldwide.

Both films are based on books by Dan Brown. "The Da Vinci Code" earned more than US$753 million worldwide, but raised the ire of many Christians who accused the movie of slandering the Church.

Story for History

A DREAM COME TRUE

It has been exactly nine months since I left home in Kalimpong and all my loved ones to pursue my dream. I always dreamt to be a Counselor and a Psychologist. People often say that dreams are a figment of our imagination, I do agree with this, however my dream turned into reality. A reality that came true due to Gods loving grace and because of the support provided to me by my Church, Church of North India, through the benign help of The Rev. Dr. Enos Das Pradhan, General Secretary and the Council for World Mission. Indeed to study abroad on a scholarship, pursuing a course I always wanted to do with no worries about finances is a dream come true. ...more
