The education ministry in the Diocese of Barrackpore is growing leaps and bounds under the leadership of its Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Brojen Malakar.

The Rev. Dr. Enos Das Pradhan, at the dedication of the new block, said that the Diocese through its educational institutions is not only imparting education to children, but building the future of the community and the country as through education we can achieve status and good life. In his message the General Secretary underlined the need for focusing on the care and education of the children for a better future. He congratulated Bishop Malakar for his leadership and Mr. H. P. Dass, Principal for his commitment and direction that has led the school successfully.

St. Stephen’s School, Dum Dum, is named after Bishop R.W. Bryan, the Founder Bishop of the Diocese. St. Stephen’s School made a very humble beginning in the year 1956, the same year as the Diocese of Barrackpore was created. Originally it was housed within the compound of Jessop’s Co. to help the children of the workers of the Company. Later, in 1971 the School was shifted to the compound of St. Stephen’s Church and a portion of the huge church building was used. Shortly thereafter the School started constructing its own building phase by phase. It got affiliation of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi in 1998. Its shining success story heightened the reputation of the School very quickly and demand for more seats increased day by day. When the strength crossed 3500 mark, the School had to opt for opening branches. Today there are 12 branches, three franchisee institutions and opening of a few more, including an engineering college, is in process. Together, the schools are known as ‘St. Stephen’s Group of Schools’.
