OBITUARY

Rt. Rev. Arthur William Luther

(21st March 1919-25th January 2009)

Yet another link of the pre-union days has been promoted to glory.  Bishop Arthur William Luther born on 21st March 1919 passed away at his Pune residence on 25th January 2009 and was funeral service took place at the St. Paul ’s Church, Pune the same evening.

Bishop Luther was consecrated under CIPBC in the year 1957 and he held the Diocesan charge of the Diocese of Nashik and in post union period he took over the charge of the Diocese of Bombay when Bishop Christopher Robinson died and later left the episcopal ministry to join the Leprosy Mission.

Bishop A. W. Luther, held charge of three dioceses in his lifetime (Nasik Diocese of the former Church of India, Pakistan and Ceylon, Bombay and Kolhapur dioceses after the inauguration of the Church of North India).

During the service a few people were allowed to speak, and without an exception they paid glowing tributes to their beloved Bishop Luther. Among those who spoke were: Bishop Vijay Sathe, Bishop of Pune Diocese; Rev. Bhasker Sojwal, a long time friend from Nagpur days; Dr. Augustine Borde, a former Principal of Wilson College, Bombay ; Dr. Nitin Joseph, Medical Superintendent of the N.M.Wadia Hospital , Pune; Dr. R. K. Kolhatkar, Rev. D. S. Pathak and some others.

All recalled what a pleasant personality Bishop Luther was. He was always approachable; truly a ‘people’s bishop’. No matter how hard and difficult the circumstances, the joy of the Lord always emanated from the face of Bishop Luther. Many drew a great inspiration from him.

Our hearts are full of gratitude to God for giving such a wonderful person – a friend, pastor and bishop. Bishop Luther is survived by his son Devdutt who has settled abroad, and a daughter, Dr. Usha Rahator who has been serving in the N. M. Wadia Hospital , Pune for many years. His youngest daughter Lata died a few years ago. Previous to that Dr. Mrs. Kamal Luther had also left for her heavenly abode.”

Let us thank God for his life and ministry and pray for Peace and Comfort to the family.
