AP Women get their due

Women workers of the state now get paid as much as male workers.

For decades, women workers were paid a lesser minimum wage than their male counterparts on the plea that they were physically weak and could not handle strenuous work. “It was Rs 50 per day for the male worker and Rs 30 per day for the female worker for almost two decades,” said Mr K. Raju, principal secretary for rural development. Countless agitations had been taken out by Left parties in the state for the removal of this disparity. The quiet revolution was finally accomplished with the implementation of the Union government's National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, which removed this gender bias in one stroke. Women workers are also being paid Rs 80 per day now along with their male comrades. Earlier, contractors used to opt for married.  (Source: Deccan Herald, March 09, 2008)
