Youth leadership Development Programme at Balangir

Realizing the necessity of equipping young people with leadership skills and concepts, a four-days Workshop was organized by the Diocese of Sambalpur from 1st to 3rd April 2008 at Community Hall, Mission Compound, Bolangir.  The Diocese has a tremendous number of potential youth who could reasonably contribute to the life and witness of the church in the western part of Orissa.  Delivering the keynote address at the beginning of the Workshop Rev. Naba Kishor Barick, Bishop’s Commissary, challenged the delegates to accept Jesus as the role model of servant leadership and walk his way.

A group of 34 boys and girls representing different pastorates attended the workshop which was facilitated by Mr. Kasta Dip, Coordinator, Youth Concerns, CNI Synod; Mr. Nishant Jal and Mr. Sekhar Tandy who had been earlier trained by the CNI Synod.  In a participatory learning process, the topics covered were Transitional Analysis, Social Analysis, Group Dynamics & Management, Globalization, Human Rights, Inter-faith Relations and Communication Skills.  Besides, Bible studies on Servant Leadership, Peace and Justice and Women and Patriarchy were conducted every morning.  In order to facilitate practical learning of the delegates, group works were done and developmental games were played.

The Workshop facilitated an alleviated cognitive development of personalities in those attended and challenged them to be Cross-bearers in their local contexts where most of the families are poverty-stricken, people are illiterate, youths are misguided by media and peer pressure and church is a silent onlooker to spiritual tragedies happening around.  After a thorough review of youth activities over the years, the DYFC was reformed.  On the culmination of the programme Rev. Barick dedicated the newly chosen leaders of DYFC and challenged the delegates to be the agents of transformation and sent them off with his blessings and good wishes as they plan to organize the similar kind of programmes in their respective pastorates.
