Minority
Commission’s Reports on Kandhamal Clashes
The CNN-IBN has learnt that the Minority Commission report
on the Kandhamal violence severely indicts the Orissa government for
not doing enough to prevent the communal conflagration that gripped
the state late in December.
The Commission went all the way to Phulbani, although it
stopped short of visiting Kandhamal.
The Commission says that it is convinced of what Christian
groups have
been alleging that they were the targets of attacks; that the Naveen
Patnaik government had prior information that there would be trouble
around Christmas and, therefore, could have prevented the attacks;
and right-wing organisations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad,
actively involved in anti-conversions, spear-headed the attacks.

Dalits
and Christians are targets of a sophisticated hate campaign in
Orissa
Anger is growing among the tribal people in
Orissa against the state government's indifference towards their
problems and sufferings. As such the tribals are at war with the
government over displacement issues in different parts of the state
and what has enraged them now is the fact that hundreds of non-tribals
have cornered advantages and privileges that should have come to
them. The issue is no longer limited to Kandhmal district which saw
a massive ethnic conflict last month, now it is spreading to other
districts as well....more

Government in favor of Dalit
Converts Quota
The
issue of reservation benefits to dalit converts has taken a dramatic turn
after a significant move made by the Congress led UPA Government
advocating that bringing such segments under the quota bracket would be a
way of ensuring social justice.
"If a Dalit loses reservation benefits after conversion to
Islam or Christianity, that is unjustified," said party general
secretary Digvijay Singh.,..more
