The
Faith
Island
Women walk along
silently, their heads covered in gossamer veils, clutching their
copy of the Bible to the newly built Church of North India (CNI)
worship centre at Perka village in Car Nicobar. Two-and-a-half years
after the tsunami, the only concrete structures standing in the

Many modern-day teachers, like teachers
in their own childhood, still believe sparing the rod only spoils the
child. The Churches of North India (CNI) is changing all that. It will ban

With no conviction,
foeticide continues
Sex-selective
abortions are banned under law, but 24-year-old Asha was told the gender
of her unborn child at a state government-run hospital for Rs 50. “The
nurse who assisted the doctor doing my ultrasound at
Care
Hospital
in
Mysore
offered to tell me the gender of the baby for Rs 50. She said later she
had charged less because it was a girl,” says Asha. Luckily for the
unborn child, Asha wanted a girl child so did not get the baby aborted. As
it happened, the nurse was wrong. “I had a son and now villagers are
wary of what these greedy doctors tell them,” she says.

Stories
from the fields

Families
in Talbagan were used to the men leaving the village early in the
morning, make that short walk to the naali, take their dingy and
head for sea. They would come back with a decent catch of fish,
not just to feed the family, but also to sell in order to make a
small profit.
The tsunami changed their
lives- the naali no longer fills with water. It is difficult to go
into the sea as frequently as before. In this small island, this
means loss of a regular source of income.
